Where Should You Keep a Fire Extinguisher at Home?

A home fire extinguisher should be visible, accessible, and near an exit route rather than hidden behind the area where a fire is likely to start. Evacuation remains the priority: fight only a small fire when there is a clear exit behind you and you know how to use the correct extinguisher.

A home fire extinguisher should be visible, accessible, and near an exit route rather than hidden behind the area where a fire is likely to start. Evacuation remains the priority: fight only a small fire when there is a clear exit behind you and you know how to use the correct extinguisher.

Place it near an exit, not on top of the hazard

In a kitchen, for example, an extinguisher near the doorway or exit route can be reached without crossing a burning pan or appliance. Do not store it above the stove, behind the oven, or in a cabinet buried behind other items.

Keep it visible and at a manageable height

Use the recommended bracket and a location adults can reach quickly. Avoid damp areas, temperature extremes, and places where the extinguisher will be struck; follow the manufacturer's storage instructions.

Choose a rating suited to the home's hazards

The label identifies the fire classes the extinguisher is designed for. A kitchen and garage may call for different capabilities; choose a listed product and understand its limitations before an emergency.

Do not fight a fire if the exit is lost or the fire is growing

If smoke is heavy, fire is spreading, a fuel cylinder is involved, or you are unsure you can control it, leave, close doors behind you when safe, and call emergency services. A portable extinguisher does not replace evacuation or the fire department.
