How to Organize Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets work better when they are organized by task and weight rather than appearance. Items used together should stay near one another, heavy objects belong low, and cleaners or hazardous items should be kept away from food and out of children's reach.

Group items by kitchen task

Keep dishes near the dishwasher, cookware near the cooking area, and glasses near where drinks are served. Reducing unnecessary movement makes the arrangement easier to maintain than a purely decorative system.

Place heavy and bulky items where they are safe

Pots, small appliances, and heavy containers work best on low, sturdy shelves. Avoid stacks that require holding an unstable tower while pulling an item from the bottom.

Separate food from nonfood products

Do not store cleaners, pesticides, or other chemicals beside food or frequently used dishes. Knives, alcohol, and hazardous products need a location that accounts for children and pets.

Use organizers to solve a specific problem

A shelf riser, vertical divider, or turntable can improve access if it fits without blocking hinges or appliance ventilation. Measure first and avoid filling every gap simply because an organizer exists for it.
