Thorough toilet-bowl cleaning means removing deposits at the waterline and under the rim without mixing incompatible products. The safest method is to use an appropriate cleaner, allow contact time, and brush, reserving abrasives for materials that can tolerate them.
Ventilate and use one product at a time
Read the label and do not combine toilet cleaner with bleach, vinegar, ammonia, or descalers. If one product has been used, rinse thoroughly before switching to another to avoid dangerous gases.
Apply under the rim and allow contact time
Distribute cleaner over the wet surface, especially under the rim where biofilm collects. Allow the labeled contact time; brushing immediately can remove product before it has worked.
Brush the waterline and visible trapway
Use a sound toilet brush and work on deposits without splashing. Pumice is appropriate only for certain porcelain surfaces and must stay wet; never use it on finishes that can scratch.
Fast-returning deposits can reflect hard water or a running toilet
Recurring mineral rings do not always mean poor cleaning. Check whether the toilet runs continuously or hard water is driving scale and correct the cause to reduce maintenance.
