Heavy ice buildup in a freezer usually points to humid air entering, a door that is not sealing, or a defrost-system problem. The location and pattern of frost help separate a door issue from an internal fault without opening energized panels.
Check the door seal and anything blocking closure
Clean the gasket and make sure packages or drawers are not holding the door open. A strip of paper that pulls out with little resistance in one area can indicate poor gasket compression.
Frost near the door often points to moisture entry
Snowy frost around the frame, front shelves, or exposed food fits frequent openings or air leakage. Reduce door-open time and correct sealing before blaming the defrost system.
A heavily frosted interior panel can point to defrost trouble
If the evaporator cover repeatedly becomes packed with ice and airflow drops, the defrost heater, sensor, or control may be failing. Do not remove panels or chip ice near refrigerant tubing.
Protect food during any thawing
If the manual calls for a full shutdown defrost, move food to another freezer or an ice-filled cooler. Do not use knives, flame, or intense heat to speed the process.
