A room can run hotter because it receives more sun, loses conditioned air, gets weak supply airflow, or has extra heat from equipment and occupants. Comparing temperature, time of day, and airflow helps separate heat gain from an air-distribution problem.
See whether the problem follows sun exposure
If the room overheats mainly in the afternoon on one exposure, windows and solar gain may dominate the load. Window coverings, exterior shading, and air-sealing may help more than adjusting vents.
Compare supply airflow with similar rooms
A nearly closed register, heavily loaded filter, or damaged duct can reduce airflow. Do not close many other registers just to force air toward one room because that can change system pressure and performance.
Look for air leakage and weak insulation
Window gaps, attic access panels, exterior electrical boxes, and ceilings below a hot attic can add significant heat. Sealing accessible leaks and improving insulation where appropriate reduces the load at its source.
Measure the system before making major balancing changes
A technician can measure airflow, static pressure, duct condition, and return-air paths to determine whether the room receives less air than designed. Adding fans or closing vents without measurements can hide a larger restriction.
