Only filters identified by the manufacturer as reusable should be washed. Many air-conditioning filters are meant to be replaced rather than cleaned, and wetting a disposable filter can distort it or damage the filter media.
Confirm that the filter is actually washable
Check the part number, label, or equipment manual. If the filter is a pleated disposable type or marked for replacement, replace it rather than trying to restore it by washing.
Turn the equipment off before removing the filter
Stop the blower so it does not pull dust through the system while the filter is out, and use the access path intended by the manufacturer. Do not open electrical service panels to reach a filter not designed for user maintenance.
Wash using the specified method without damaging the media
For reusable filters, vacuum loose debris if allowed and rinse in the recommended direction with moderate water pressure. Avoid hard brushes or chemicals that can degrade foam, mesh, or filter treatments.
Reinstall only when the filter is fully dry
A damp filter can encourage odor, distortion, or biological growth. Let it air-dry without excessive heat, reinstall it in the correct direction, and make sure the frame seals as it did before.
