Ants keep returning when the colony remains active and still has food, water, or an entry route. Cleaning up visible ants removes foragers, but it does not necessarily remove the nest or the chemical trail guiding others.
Find the resource the ants are using
Follow the trail as far as practical and check for crumbs, sugar, pet food, moisture, or condensation. Removing the resource makes that route less rewarding to the colony.
Clean the trail after removing food and water
Clean the surface with a material-safe cleaner to remove food residue and trail cues. Do not rely only on spraying the visible line because that can scatter ants without addressing the source.
Seal entry points once you know the route
Gaps around pipes, frames, and baseboards can become travel routes. Seal accessible openings after observing the trail so you do not erase the clue before understanding where the ants are coming from.
Persistent activity may need targeted control
If large numbers return despite sanitation and exclusion, a nest may be inside the structure or nearby. Label-directed baits are usually more targeted than broad spraying; extensive or difficult infestations may need professional pest management.
